La lettera circolare pubblicata dalla Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede ha lo scopo di aiutare le Conferenze Episcopali di tutto il mondo a elaborare linee guida chiare e coordinate per affrontare i casi di abusi sessuali su minori commessi da chierici. Il documento ricorda che la responsabilità primaria di rispondere a tali abusi spetta ai vescovi diocesani, sottolineando al contempo l’importanza di ascoltare le vittime, di offrire un’assistenza pastorale e psicologica e di cooperare, quando necessario, con le autorità civili competenti. L’accento è posto sulla protezione dei minori, sulla prevenzione di nuovi abusi e sull’applicazione appropriata del diritto canonico e civile.
